Acupuncture is undoubtedly the branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine best known to Western audiences. In itself, it can be considered an almost complete therapeutic technique capable of treating many pathologies. In the West, Acupuncture has been under scrutiny by official medicine for several years, and there are numerous published studies on its most diverse applications.

HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS

According to traditional Chinese medicine, our body is crossed by pathways that conduct and regulate energy (called QI) produced and stored by the organs and viscera ensuring all vital functions. These pathways are called meridians. An alteration, or obstruction of the vital energy path (Qi) in the meridians, results in the onset of disease. This imbalance can be caused by external factors such as temperature, excessive physical labor, intake of harmful substances (cigarettes, etc.), or by internal causes such as improper eating habits, genetic constitution, etc.

HOW THE NEEDLES ARE USED AND HOW LONG A SESSION LASTS

In the first part of the session, the doctor records the patient's medical history, which consists of collecting biographical data, and all details about the patient's current pathology and any previous illnesses. Then, the doctor, who has already made a diagnosis during the examination according to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, locates points on the patient's body surface that constitute the chosen therapeutic formula. Currently, sterile, disposable steel and copper needles are used, which ensure maximum hygienic safety. Typically, the acupuncturist uses 5 to 12 needles per session. An acupuncture session lasts about 25 to 30 minutes from the time all the needles have been put in place. A course of therapy ranges from a minimum of 5 sessions to a maximum of 20 sessions on a weekly or biweekly basis. All patients with any pathology and at any age (preferably from 6 years of age) and in pregnancy, can undergo Acupuncture as it has no side effects. The technique of Acupuncture is recognized by Italian law as a medical act, therefore, it must be performed by a surgeon, who has graduated from a specialized course in this discipline in Italy.
